The Oshkosh Recreation Department Swimming Lessons are held at Oshkosh North High School and Oshkosh West High School, recreational swimming is available at Oshkosh North High School.

Youth Swim Lessons

Swim Lesson Participant Information

Please Read Carefully Before Registering

Participants may enroll initially in one class. Participants wishing to enroll in an additional class must wait until completion of the original class.

Registration must take place in person only at the ORD office during regular office hours. You must bring paperwork received from the class your child completed for verification of proper placement. Click here for 2017-2018 class schedule & registration information.

If you are unsure what level to register your child for, please call the ORD office at (920) 424-0150, and we will try to assist you.

If you have taken lessons elsewhere, please provide us with that information on your registration form under the swim lesson notes section so we may properly process your form.

Class size is limited. Maximum 10 for Levels PC, IVA-VIB. Maximum class size for the 3 & 4 year old classes are six. Maximum class size for Levels I through III and Older Beginner is eight.

If you are going to miss the first scheduled day of class, you MUST notify the ORD Office, 424-0150, prior to the first day of class or you will automatically be DROPPED from the class and replaced with someone from the wait list.

Registrations will NOT be accepted at the pool site.

NOTE: Pool temperatures are regulated by the schools within state health code standards. The schools try to maintain a comfortable water temperature for all user groups. Please keep this in mind when attending our classes.

Parent/Child

Age:  3 year minimum

This class is for the child who has never taken lessons before, is afraid of the water, cannot put his/her face in the water, or hold their breath and needs parental assistance. Beginner swimming skills are introduced. An adult must attend and participate in this class with the child.

3 & 4 Year Old-Beginner

Ages:  3 - 4

Prerequistes:

  • Continuing ORD Student -passing of Parent/Child.
  • New ORD Student - For the child who has not had formal swim lessons but would be comfortable in the water without parent assistance.

Skills learned will include kicking, floating, submersion and more.

3 & 4 Year Old-Advanced

Ages:  3 - 4

Prerequisites:

  • Continuing ORD Student -Passing of 3 & 4 Year Old Beginner Class.
  • New ORD Student -For the child who has had previous lessons, enjoys the water and is comfortable without parent assistance.

Skills will be introduced to prepare for Level I.

Older Beginner

Ages 10-14

For the child who needs to work on beginner skills (Level I or II) and is not comfortable being with the younger children. Students will be taught at their level and progressed accordingly.

Level I – Introduction To Water Skills

Prerequisites:

  • 5 years of age OR
  • Passing of 3 & 4 year old Advanced

This class is for the child who enjoys submersion, is comfortable on their back in the water and actively uses their arms and legs to move in the water. All basic skills for swimming on front and back are taught.

Level II – Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Prerequisite: Passing of Level I

All basic skills for swimming on front and back are taught. Students will work on completing skills independently.

Level III – Stroke Development

Required:  Passing of Level II

Students will work in deep water, begin diving, perform the front and back crawl strokes, and is ready to learn the elementary backstroke.

Level IV-A – Stroke Improvement

Required:  Passing of Level III

This level will continue building skills introduced in Level IV-A. Longer swimming distances will be worked on.

Level IV-B – Stroke Improvement

Required: Passing of level IV-A

This level will continue building skills introduced in Level IV-A. Longer swimming distances will be worked on.

Level V – Stroke Refinement

Required: Passing of Level IV-B

This level continues to strengthen all strokes and refining proper techniques.

Level VI-A – Personal Water Safety

Required: Passing of Level V

This level works to perfect all strokes, turns and dives. Four types of turns are taught

Level VI-B – Fitness Swimmer

Required: Passing of Level VI-A

This level continues endurance practice & teaches techniques to develop a fitness swimming routine.

Private/Semi-Private Swim Lessons

Ages: 3-17

Work on swimming skills one-on-one with one of our certified swim instructors. You may only register for one class. We will schedule as many students as we have instructors and space to accommodate. You will receive a phone call if a spot is available for a child.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course

This course is designed to teach the student basic lifeguarding skills needed to become a certified lifeguard. Certification in CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED is included. A pre-course swimming skills test will be administered on the first day. Satisfactory completion of this skills test must occur to continue with the course. Participants must attend all class sessions. You must be 16 years of age before you can legally work as a lifeguard.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course

This course is designed to teach students how to teach youth and adults to learn to swim, refine strokes and teach safety skills. A pre-course swimming skills test will be administered on the first day. Satisfactory completion of this test must occur to continue with the course. Students must attend all scheduled classes. You must be 16 years of age by the last day of this course.

Recreational Swim

Recreational Swim is offered at Oshkosh North High School on Saturdays. Use Door #1 at the southeast corner of the building facing Smith Avenue.

Daily Fees:

  • 3 & Under Free
  • Youth (ages 4-17) $1.25
  • Adults (ages 18-54) $2.25
  • Adults (55 and over) $1.25

Lap Swim Fees:

  • All ages $1.50

Private/Semi Private Swim Lessons

Available to any person age 3 or older wishing to work on swimming skills 1-on-1 with one of our certified swim instructors. Each lesson is 30 minutes. No more than 8 lessons will be scheduled per session. Lessons are offered September through April.

Aquatics

Water Aerobics

Cardiovascular conditioning and spot toning done in the water. This class offers less stress on the joints and back. You do not have to swim to enjoy this class.
