Have you wanted to gain a better understanding of how investing works? Are you confused by the conflicting information you get from the media, from your friends and colleagues, and even from advisors? If so, this course is for you. We are going to examine the investing question from the ground up, breaking down the topic to give you a meaningful and disciplined framework from which to judge various investment approaches. Whether you are new to the topic, or have decades of experience, there will likely be something in this course for you.
Session One (6/11): The Basics: To begin our five part journey, we first have to establish a basic understanding of the investment universe. In this course, we will start from square one, describing what the basic investment vehicles are, how they function, and their benefits and features.
Session Two (6/25): The Universe of Accounts: Now that you have the basics down, we can start to talk about the types of accounts. Do you have questions about Roth IRAs, IRAs, or Simple IRAs? What about 529 plans or 403(b) plans? This is the course where we will cover how many of these accounts work.
Session Three (7/9): Myths and Truths of Investing: Having settled the basics, we will move into the next section of course work which will detail the major question every investor has to answer for themselves: Given what we know about markets, what is a prudent investment philosophy to operate from? Many investors unknowingly have this choice made for them, but we believe you should make this decision.
Session Four (7/23): Working with an Advisor: The financial services industry is a compicated one. Not only do we use a myriad of titles, there is also the problem of assymetric information; meaning, one side of the table usually has more or better information. Because of this, people put their trust in advisors based on a "gut feeling," or someone elses word. In this course, we'll get into how the industry works, and the tough questions to ask so that you know your best interests are being served.
Session Five (8/4): What Really Matters: It is only natural that people want results. And it is a very responsible thing to try to evaluate your investment results. Unfortunately, many investors lack the knowledge and experience to create the appropriate benchmarks for evaluation. Or they focus on factors that are not relevent to results. In this course we will look at how you should evaluate your results so that you can potentially get the outcomes you are looking for.

Meet your instructor, Jeremy Burri, Investor Training and Development at Smith Securities.
Jeremy is a veteran of the financial services industry, having started his career while he was in college in 2001. He has worked in the east central WI area for all of that time, so his face may be familiar.
In 2008, after his master's program at Oklahoma State, it felt for him like the financial services industry was broken. Just steps away from leaving the profession in 2009, he discovered that there was indeed another way.
"People work very hard to build their wealth. Most investors do not understand how their money is being invested. The industry would like you to believe it's too "complicated" for you. Well, we believe that it's not. You have a choice, and it's our mission to help you reclaim your confidence in making your investing decisions."
